What is PTA tax?

PTA tax is the duty you pay to register an imported mobile phone in Pakistan. Every phone that uses a Pakistani SIM must be registered in PTA’s DIRBS system. Phones bought from official local dealers are already registered, but phones brought from abroad or bought as “non-PTA” must be registered by paying the tax, or their IMEI is blocked on mobile networks.

Rates are set by FBR according to the phone’s customs value in US dollars. Regulatory duty was cut by about 20% from July 1, 2026. Sales tax is charged on the phone’s value in rupees.

Passport vs CNIC: which is cheaper?

Passport registration

Usually the cheapest option because income tax is not charged. Available only within 60 days of arriving in Pakistan, on the passport you travelled with.

CNIC registration

Available any time and for any phone. Includes income tax, which is doubled for non-filers, so getting on FBR’s Active Taxpayer List lowers your cost.

How to calculate PTA tax

Find your phone’s slab using its value in US dollars, then add the slab’s regulatory duty, mobile levy and income tax to the sales tax. For example, a $799 phone at Rs 282 per dollar is worth Rs 225,318. On passport, that is Rs 17,600 regulatory duty + Rs 56,330 sales tax (25%) + Rs 8,000 mobile levy = about Rs 81,930.

  3. Generate a PSID (payment slip ID) showing the exact tax for your phone.

PTA tax calculator FAQ

Is PTA tax lower on passport or CNIC?

Passport registration is usually cheaper because income tax is not charged. You can only use a passport within 60 days of arriving in Pakistan, and it must be the passport you travelled on. Otherwise the phone is registered on CNIC.

How is PTA tax calculated?

PTA tax is charged by FBR based on the phone’s customs value in US dollars. Each price slab has a fixed regulatory duty, a mobile levy and income tax, plus sales tax as a percentage of the phone’s value in rupees.

Why is my actual PTA tax different from the calculator?

FBR uses its own assessed value for each phone model and its own exchange rate, which can differ from the retail price and the market rate. The calculator gives a close estimate; the final amount is shown on the DIRBS portal when you generate your PSID.

Do non-filers pay more PTA tax?

Yes. On CNIC registration, people not on FBR’s Active Taxpayer List usually pay double the income tax part. Filers can also claim the income tax back when filing their annual return.

What happens if I do not pay PTA tax?

After the grace period, PTA blocks the phone’s IMEI on Pakistani mobile networks. The phone still works on Wi-Fi, but SIM calls and mobile data stop working until the tax is paid.

How do I pay PTA tax?

Apply on the DIRBS portal or a customer service centre with your IMEI and passport or CNIC, generate a PSID, then pay it through your bank app, ATM or a bank branch. The phone is usually registered within a day.
