Wondering how to block a stolen phone in Pakistan? PTA can block your phone’s IMEI so it stops working on every Pakistani mobile network. This guide explains the full process, the information you need, how to check the block by SMS 8484, and how to unblock the phone if you get it back.

How to block a stolen or lost phone in Pakistan through PTA

What happens when PTA blocks a phone?

PTA runs the Lost & Stolen Device System (LSDS), which is connected to its DIRBS device registry. When you report your phone, PTA blocks its IMEI number, so the phone can no longer connect to Jazz, Zong, Telenor, Ufone or any other mobile network in Pakistan, even with a new SIM. As a result, the stolen phone becomes far less valuable to thieves and resellers. However, blocking does not track or recover the phone; instead, the police handle recovery.

How to block a stolen phone through PTA

You can file a blocking complaint in three ways:

PTA CMS app

Download PTA’s Complaint Management System app (Android and iPhone), sign up, choose a new complaint for a stolen or missing mobile, and fill in the details.

Online complaint form

On the PTA website, open the consumer complaints section and choose the stolen mobile handset or IMEI complaint form.

Helpline or PTA office

If you can’t file online, call PTA’s helpline on 0800-55055 or visit your nearest PTA zonal office.

Because PTA sends a one-time code (OTP) to the SIM number you used in the missing phone, first get a replacement SIM with the same number from your network.

Information you need

  • Your detailsName, father’s name, CNIC number and city
  • Your mobile numberThe number used in the phone during the last six months, registered on your CNIC
  • Phone detailsIMEI number, brand, model and colour
  • Incident detailsWhat happened, where and when
  • OptionalEmail address, postal address and FIR number

Important rules to know

  • First, the SIM you used in the missing phone must be on your own CNIC.
  • Also, PTA can’t block a phone that has never had a Pakistani SIM in it.
  • For dual-SIM phones, blocking one IMEI also blocks the second one.
  • You can still block phones you lost months or even years ago, as long as you have the correct IMEI.
  • Finally, if the IMEI and mobile number don’t match PTA’s records, PTA returns the complaint so you can correct it.

How to check if your phone is blocked

SMS 8484

Send your 15-digit IMEI by SMS to 8484, and you’ll then get a reply with its status.

DIRBS portal

Check the IMEI on PTA’s DIRBS website.

DVS app

Use PTA’s Device Verification System (DVS) app to check the IMEI status.

In most cases, PTA blocks the phone within 24 hours after it verifies your complaint.

How to unblock your phone if you get it back

  1. First, note that only the person who filed the original complaint can request unblocking.
  2. Then submit an unblock request through the same PTA complaint system.
  3. Next, enter your original complaint reference number and CNIC.
  4. Finally, PTA checks your details, usually unblocks the IMEI within 24 hours and sends you an SMS.

Buying a used phone? Check it first

Before paying for a second-hand phone, dial *#06# to see its IMEI and check it by SMS to 8484. PTA blocks phones reported as stolen, so you could lose your money. Also, if the phone is non-PTA, use our PTA tax calculator to see how much it will cost to register. Most importantly, never buy a phone whose IMEI on screen doesn’t match the box, because changing a phone’s IMEI is illegal in Pakistan.

Block stolen phone FAQ

How long does PTA take to block a stolen phone?

PTA usually blocks the IMEI within 24 hours after your complaint is verified. You can confirm the block by sending the IMEI to 8484.

Can I block my phone without the IMEI number?

No. PTA needs the IMEI. Find it on the phone’s box, the purchase receipt, or in your Google or Apple account’s device list.

Do I need an FIR to block my phone with PTA?

No. An FIR number is optional on PTA’s form. However, reporting to the police is still important if you want any chance of recovering the phone, because PTA only blocks it.

Can PTA track my stolen phone?

No. PTA’s system blocks the phone on mobile networks but does not track its location. Use Google Find Hub or Apple Find My to see its last location, and share it with the police.

Can I block a phone that was lost a long time ago?

Yes. You can still block a phone you lost months or years ago, as long as you have the correct IMEI and the SIM you used in it was on your CNIC.

Will a blocked phone still work on Wi-Fi?

A PTA block stops the phone from using mobile networks. It may still connect to Wi-Fi, which is why you should also lock or erase it remotely with Google Find Hub or iCloud Find My.
