What Does Pro Rata Salary Mean?
Pro rata is Latin for "in proportion". In other words, a pro rata salary is a share of the full-time salary that matches the hours you actually work. For example, if you work half the full-time hours, you earn half the full-time salary.
Job adverts often say "£30,000 pro rata". This means £30,000 is the full-time figure. Therefore, a part-time worker on that job earns less in total, although their hourly rate stays the same.
How the Pro Rata Salary Calculator Works
The calculation compares your hours with full-time hours. As a result, you get the percentage of the full-time salary you will earn.
First, divide your weekly hours by the full-time hours.
Then multiply the full-time salary by that share.
Finally, divide by 12 for monthly pay or by 52 for weekly pay.
The formula
Pro rata salary = Full-time salary × (Your hours ÷ Full-time hours)

Pro Rata Holiday Entitlement
Almost all UK workers have the right to 5.6 weeks of paid holiday a year. For part-time workers, this is worked out in proportion to the days or hours they work.
- By days: multiply 5.6 by the days you work each week. For example, 3 days a week gives 16.8 days of holiday.
- By hours: multiply 5.6 by your weekly hours. So 22.5 hours a week gives 126 hours of holiday.
- The cap: statutory leave is capped at 28 days, which is what a 5-day full-time worker gets.
- Bank holidays: these can be included in the 5.6 weeks. However, your contract may give you more.

Pro Rata Salary Calculator FAQs
How do I calculate a pro rata salary?
First, divide your weekly hours by the full-time hours. Then multiply the full-time salary by that figure. For example, 22.5 hours out of 37.5 is 60%, so a £30,000 salary becomes £18,000.
What does pro rata mean on a job advert?
It means the advertised salary is the full-time figure. Therefore, if you work fewer hours, you are paid a proportional share of it. A job listed at £30,000 pro rata for 3 days a week pays £18,000.
Is my hourly rate lower if I work part-time?
No. Part-time workers have the right to the same hourly rate as comparable full-time staff. Because of this, only your total pay changes, not your rate per hour.
How much holiday do part-time workers get in the UK?
Most workers get 5.6 weeks of paid holiday a year. So someone who works 3 days a week gets 5.6 × 3 = 16.8 days. In addition, full-time workers' statutory leave is capped at 28 days.
Is a pro rata salary before or after tax?
The pro rata salary is a gross figure, before Income Tax and National Insurance. However, your take-home pay will be lower once those deductions are made.
How accurate is this pro rata salary calculator?
It uses the standard UK method of hours worked divided by full-time hours. Even so, your employer may round figures differently, so check your contract for the exact amounts.
