Travel times are estimates without live traffic and can be longer than real motorway times. Always check road conditions before you travel.

      What is a distance calculator?

A distance calculator tells you how far apart two places are and how long the trip takes. Instead of measuring on a map by hand, you type a start and an end point and get the answer in seconds. It is useful for planning road trips, deliveries, commutes and moves. Looking for more free tools? Visit our home page or browse all calculators.

      How this distance calculator works

As you type, the calculator suggests matching cities, towns and addresses. Once you pick a start and a destination, it works out the fastest driving route between them using maps and routing from Mapbox. You get the road distance, the estimated driving time, the straight-line ("as the crow flies") distance and the route drawn on the map. Use the switch to see results in kilometres or miles, and add your car's mileage and the fuel price to estimate the cost of the trip.

How to calculate fuel cost for a trip

The formula depends on how your car's fuel economy is measured:

      • L/100 km (Europe, Australia, Canada): litres used = distance in km × L/100 km ÷ 100. A 350 km trip at 7 L/100 km uses 24.5 litres.
      • MPG (USA and UK): gallons used = distance in miles ÷ MPG. A 220 mile trip at 30 MPG uses about 7.3 gallons. Note that a UK gallon is larger than a US gallon, so the same car shows a higher MPG in the UK.
      • km per litre (South Asia and parts of the Middle East): litres used = distance in km ÷ km per litre. A 374 km trip at 14 km/L uses about 26.7 litres.

Multiply the fuel used by the price per litre or gallon to get the one-way cost, and double it for a return trip. Open Estimate fuel cost in the calculator above, choose your units, and it does the maths for you.

Tips for a better distance calculator result

      Be specific

Add the state or country, for example "Springfield, Illinois" instead of just "Springfield", so the right place is found.

      Pick from the suggestions

Choose a suggestion from the list as you type. It gives an exact location and a more accurate route.

      Switch units anytime

Flip the KM / Miles switch and the results update instantly without recalculating.

      Plan extra time

Times do not include traffic, fuel stops, tolls or rest breaks. Add a buffer for long journeys.

      Distance calculator FAQ

Does the distance calculator show driving or straight-line distance?

Both. The main result is the driving distance along roads, and you also see the straight-line distance between the two points.

Does the travel time include traffic?

No. The time is based on typical road speeds without live traffic, so real journeys can be faster on motorways or slower in city traffic.

Can I calculate the distance between two cities in different countries?

Yes, as long as they are connected by road. If there is no drivable route, for example across the sea, the calculator will tell you.

Can I share a route with someone?

Yes. After calculating, click "Copy link to this route". Anyone who opens the link will see the same route calculated automatically.

How do I estimate the fuel cost of my trip?

Open "Estimate fuel cost", choose your fuel economy unit (L/100 km, km per litre, US MPG or UK MPG), enter your car's figure and the fuel price per litre or gallon, then calculate. The cost is shown for a one-way trip in your own currency.
