How the Super Contribution Calculator Works
In general, super contributions come in two types. Firstly, concessional contributions are made from pre-tax money. Secondly, non-concessional contributions come from money you have already paid tax on.
To start with, your employer pays 12% of your ordinary earnings.
Then salary sacrifice and deductible personal amounts are added on top.
Finally, the total is checked against your cap and taxed at 15%.
The formula
Employer super = Salary × 12% · Net into super = Concessional × 85% + after-tax amounts

Super Contribution Caps for 2026–27
- Concessional cap: $32,500 a year, which covers employer super, salary sacrifice and deductible personal amounts.
- Non-concessional cap: $130,000 a year, although you may bring forward up to $390,000 if you are under 75.
- Maximum contribution base: similarly, employers don’t have to pay the super guarantee on earnings over $270,830.
Overall, these figures come from the Australian Taxation Office, and they usually rise with wage growth.
Carry-Forward of Unused Cap
If your total super balance was under $500,000 on 30 June last year, you can use unused concessional cap from the past five years. Therefore, a large one-off deductible contribution can fit within your limit. For instance, unused amounts from 2021–22 onwards are available in 2026–27. Also, you can check your available amount in ATO online services through myGov.
How Contributions Are Taxed
Concessional contributions are taxed at 15% when they reach your fund. However, if your income plus concessional contributions is over $250,000, Division 293 adds another 15%. On the other hand, if your taxable income is $37,000 or less, the low income super tax offset refunds up to $500. Meanwhile, after-tax contributions aren’t taxed again.
Payday Super from 1 July 2026
Before July 2026, employers could pay super every quarter. Since then, under Payday Super, employers must pay it with each payday, and the fund must receive it within 7 business days. As a result, your balance grows sooner, and missed payments are easier to spot on your fund statement.
