Our free Saudi VAT calculator works out VAT at the 15% standard rate in seconds. First, choose whether to add VAT to a price or remove it from a VAT-inclusive price. Then enter the amount, and the calculator shows the net amount, the VAT and the total. In addition, it handles zero-rated supplies, custom rates and multiple items.

How the Saudi VAT Calculator Works

VAT in Saudi Arabia is charged at 15% on most goods and services. Therefore, the calculation is simple once you know whether your price already includes VAT.

1
Add VAT

First, multiply the net price by 1.15 to get the total.

2
Remove VAT

Alternatively, divide the VAT-inclusive price by 1.15.

3
Find the VAT

Finally, the VAT is the difference between the total and the net amount.

The formulas

Total = Net × 1.15  ·  Net = Total ÷ 1.15

A common mistake is taking 15% off a VAT-inclusive price. However, that gives the wrong answer. Instead, the VAT inside a price is 15/115 of the total, or about 13.04%.

Saudi VAT Rate Since 2020

Saudi Arabia introduced VAT at 5% on 1 January 2018. Later, on 1 July 2020, the rate tripled to 15%, which is now one of the highest VAT rates in the Gulf. As a result, prices that include VAT are about 13% VAT, so it is worth checking the net price before you buy or invoice.

Zero-Rated and Exempt Supplies

Most sales carry 15% VAT. However, some are zero-rated and others are exempt, which matters for businesses.

  • Zero-rated (0%): for example, exports outside the GCC, international transport, qualifying medicines and medical equipment, and investment-grade gold, silver and platinum.
  • Exempt: similarly, residential rent and certain financial services, such as interest on loans, are outside VAT.
  • Why it matters: businesses can recover VAT on costs for zero-rated sales but not for exempt ones.

Who Must Register for VAT?

According to the Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority (ZATCA), a business must register for VAT when its annual taxable supplies exceed SAR 375,000. In addition, a business can choose to register once they exceed SAR 187,500. Once registered, businesses with sales above SAR 40 million file monthly, while most others file every quarter. Moreover, registered businesses must issue tax invoices through an approved e-invoicing system, known as FATOORAH.

Saudi VAT Calculator FAQs

How do I calculate 15% VAT?

First, multiply the net price by 0.15 to get the VAT. Then add it to the price. Alternatively, multiply the net price by 1.15 to get the total in one step. For example, SAR 1,000 plus 15% VAT is SAR 1,150.

How do I remove VAT from a price?

Divide the VAT-inclusive price by 1.15 to get the net amount. Then subtract the net amount from the total to find the VAT. For instance, SAR 1,150 ÷ 1.15 = SAR 1,000, so the VAT is SAR 150.

What is the current VAT rate in Saudi Arabia?

The standard VAT rate in Saudi Arabia is 15%. It rose from 5% on 1 July 2020. However, some supplies, such as exports and qualifying medicines, are zero-rated, and others are exempt.

What is the difference between zero-rated and exempt?

Zero-rated supplies are taxable at 0%, so businesses can still recover VAT on their costs. In contrast, exempt supplies are outside VAT, so the business cannot recover the VAT it pays on related costs.

When does a business need to register?

Registration with ZATCA is mandatory when annual taxable supplies exceed SAR 375,000. In addition, businesses can register voluntarily from SAR 187,500.

Can I use this Saudi VAT calculator for invoices?

Yes, it gives you the net, VAT and total amounts for an invoice. Even so, a valid tax invoice in Saudi Arabia must be issued through an approved e-invoicing system and show details such as your VAT number.
