How the UAE VAT Calculator Works
VAT in the UAE is charged at 5% on most goods and services. Therefore, the calculation is simple once you know whether your price already includes VAT.
First, multiply the net price by 1.05 to get the total.
Alternatively, divide the VAT-inclusive price by 1.05.
Finally, the VAT is the difference between the total and the net amount.
The formulas
Total = Net × 1.05 · Net = Total ÷ 1.05

For example, here are three everyday situations. In each case, the standard 5% rate applies unless stated.
A designer charges AED 1,000 before VAT for a project.
- First: 1,000 × 5% AED 50
- Then: 1,000 + 50 AED 1,050
- Finally: net AED 1,000
Similarly, a phone costs AED 2,499 including VAT, and you want the net price.
- First: 2,499 ÷ 1.05 AED 2,380
- Then: 2,499 − 2,380 AED 119
- Finally: VAT share 4.76%
A company exports goods worth AED 10,000 outside the GCC, so the 0% rate applies.

Zero-Rated and Exempt Supplies
Most sales carry 5% VAT. However, some are zero-rated and others are exempt, which matters for businesses.
- Zero-rated (0%): for example, exports outside the GCC, international transport, many healthcare and education services, and the first sale of a new home within three years of completion.
- Exempt: similarly, residential rent and later sales of homes, bare land, local passenger transport and some financial services are outside VAT.
- Why it matters: businesses can recover VAT on costs for zero-rated sales but not for exempt ones.
Who Must Register for VAT?
According to the Federal Tax Authority rules, a business must register for VAT when its taxable supplies and imports exceed AED 375,000 in the last 12 months. In addition, a business can choose to register once they exceed AED 187,500. Once registered, most businesses file VAT returns every quarter, within 28 days of the end of each period.

UAE VAT Calculator FAQs
How do I calculate 5% VAT?
First, multiply the net price by 0.05 to get the VAT. Then add it to the price. Alternatively, multiply the net price by 1.05 to get the total in one step. For example, AED 1,000 plus 5% VAT is AED 1,050.
How do I remove VAT from a price?
Divide the VAT-inclusive price by 1.05 to get the net amount. Then subtract the net amount from the total to find the VAT. For instance, AED 1,050 ÷ 1.05 = AED 1,000, so the VAT is AED 50.
What is the current VAT rate in the UAE?
The standard VAT rate in the UAE is 5%, and it has stayed the same since VAT was introduced on 1 January 2018. However, some supplies are zero-rated or exempt.
What is the difference between zero-rated and exempt?
Zero-rated supplies are taxable at 0%, so businesses can still recover VAT on their costs. In contrast, exempt supplies are outside VAT, so the business cannot recover the VAT it pays on related costs.
When does a business need to register?
Registration is mandatory when taxable supplies and imports exceed AED 375,000 in the last 12 months. In addition, businesses can register voluntarily from AED 187,500.
Can I use this UAE VAT calculator for invoices?
Yes, it gives you the net, VAT and total amounts for an invoice. Even so, a valid tax invoice must also show details such as your TRN, so follow the Federal Tax Authority's invoice rules.
Disclaimer: This calculator gives an estimate for general information only and is not tax advice. VAT treatment depends on the type of supply. Moreover, rules can change, so check the Federal Tax Authority's guidance or a tax adviser for business decisions.
