Then decide whether to add tax to a price or remove it from a total, and the calculator shows the GST or HST, any PST or QST, and the final price. As a result, you always know exactly how much tax you are paying.
How the HST Calculator Works
First of all, Canada has a federal Goods and Services Tax (GST) of 5%. However, some provinces combine it with their own tax into a single Harmonized Sales Tax (HST), while others charge a separate provincial sales tax (PST).
First of all, the province sets which taxes apply and at what rate.
Then the calculator either adds tax to a price or takes it out of a total.
Finally, it shows each tax separately, so you can check your receipt.
The formulas
Total = Price × (1 + rate) · Price = Total ÷ (1 + rate)

GST, HST and PST Rates by Province
These are the current rates, as listed by the Canada Revenue Agency, so you can compare provinces. For example, the last column shows the total tax on a $100 purchase.

| Ontario | HST | 13% | $13.00 |
| Alberta | GST | 5% | $5.00 |

| Manitoba | GST + RST | 12% | $12.00 |
| New Brunswick | HST | 15% | $15.00 |
| Newfoundland and Labrador | HST | 15% | $15.00 |

- Then: $100 + $13 $113.00
- Finally: tax share 11.5%
Similarly, a receipt shows $114 including 14% HST, and you want the pre-tax price.
- Firstly: $114 ÷ 1.14 $100.00
- Then: $114 − $100 $14.00
- Finally: HST rate 14%
In contrast, a $200 item in BC carries two separate taxes.
- Firstly: GST at 5% $10.00
- Then: PST at 7% $14.00

GST vs HST vs PST
- GST: first of all, the 5% federal tax applies on its own in Alberta and the three territories.
- HST: in addition, five provinces blend GST with their provincial tax into one rate.
- PST: meanwhile, BC, Manitoba and Saskatchewan charge their own tax on top of GST.
- QST: similarly, Quebec charges 9.975% on top of GST, so the combined rate is 14.975%.
Do You Need to Charge GST/HST?
Generally, most businesses must register for GST/HST once their taxable sales go over $30,000 in four calendar quarters in a row. Until then, they are small suppliers and can choose whether to register. However, once registered, they must charge the right rate for where the customer is, file returns and show their GST/HST number on invoices.
