Your ideal body weight is a height-based target that doctors have used for decades. First, choose your units and sex. Then enter your height, and you get four estimates, their average and a healthy weight range.

How to Use the Ideal Body Weight Calculator

  1. First, choose metric or imperial units.
  2. Next, select male or female, because the formulas use different baselines.
  3. Then enter your height.
  4. Finally, press Calculate to see four estimates, their average and a healthy BMI range.

Why Does It Use Four Formulas?

No single formula suits every body type. Therefore, this tool uses the four most cited methods: Devine, Robinson, Miller and Hamwi. Each was developed at a different time, so the results differ by a few kilograms. As a result, the average gives a more balanced estimate. For a second view, also try our BMI calculator.

The Formulas Behind the Results

1
Devine (1974)

It was first made to guide medicine doses. Today, it is still the most widely used.

2
Robinson and Miller (1983)

Both came later as refinements based on newer population data.

3
Hamwi (1964)

It is one of the earliest quick methods that clinics used.

Every formula starts at a base weight for 5 feet (60 inches) and then adds a set amount for each extra inch. For more background, see this overview of human body weight on Wikipedia.

FormulaMenWomen
Devine50 kg + 2.3 kg per inch45.5 kg + 2.3 kg per inch
Robinson52 kg + 1.9 kg per inch49 kg + 1.7 kg per inch
Miller56.2 kg + 1.41 kg per inch53.1 kg + 1.36 kg per inch
Hamwi48 kg + 2.7 kg per inch45.5 kg + 2.2 kg per inch

The extra amount applies to every inch of height over 5 feet.

Ideal Body Weight Calculator FAQs

Which formula is the most accurate?

No single formula is the most accurate, because each used different groups of people. However, Devine is the most common in clinics, so the average of all four gives a balanced result.

Does it consider muscle mass or frame size?

No, because the formulas use height alone. Therefore, athletic or large-framed people may fall outside the range.

Is ideal body weight the same as a healthy weight?

Not exactly. Ideal body weight is a height-based estimate, while a healthy weight also depends on muscle mass and overall health.

Is this ideal body weight calculator free to use?

Yes, it is completely free, and you do not need to sign up.

What is a healthy BMI range?

A BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 is usually considered healthy for adults. Therefore, the calculator also shows the weight range for that BMI at your height.

Can I use it for children?

No, because these formulas are made for adults. Therefore, please ask a doctor about a child's healthy weight.

Disclaimer: Because these formulas use height alone, this calculator is for general information and is not medical advice. However, for health decisions, please speak with a doctor.
