What is a discount calculator?

A discount calculator shows how much you pay after a percentage is taken off a price, and how much money you save. It saves you from doing the maths in your head at the shop or while shopping online. You can also use it to find a discount percentage from two prices, or to work backwards to the original price. Looking for more free tools? Visit our home page.

How to calculate a discount

A discount is a percentage taken off the original price. These are the formulas this discount calculator uses:

Discount amount = original price × discount % ÷ 100
Sale price = original price − discount amount
Discount % = (original price − sale price) ÷ original price × 100
Original price = sale price ÷ (1 − discount % ÷ 100)

Simple discount

25% off an $80 jacket saves $20, so you pay $60.

Two discounts in a row

$200 with 20% off, then an extra 10% off, costs $144. That is 28% off in total, not 30%.

Find the original price

A sale price of $75 after 25% off means the original price was $100.

Discount calculator FAQ

How do you calculate a discount?

Multiply the original price by the discount percentage and divide by 100 to get the amount saved. Subtract that amount from the original price to get the sale price. For example, 25% off $80 saves $20, so you pay $60.

How do you calculate two discounts in a row?

Apply them one after the other, not added together. Taking 20% off and then an extra 10% off is a total saving of 28%, not 30%, because the second discount applies to the already reduced price.

How do I find the original price before a discount?

Divide the sale price by one minus the discount rate. If an item costs $75 after 25% off, the original price was 75 ÷ 0.75 = $100. The reverse tab of the discount calculator does this for you.

This discount calculator gives estimates for general information. Check the final price at the checkout, as stores may round or apply tax differently.
